Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
